PROJECT OVERVIEW
"Humbug" explores the widening generational and cultural rift between a rebellious young woman, Haya, and her traditional mother and her mother's friend during a tense, late-night drive to the airport. As the older women fill the car with relentless gossip about a recent family wedding and fuss over packed homemade goods, Haya remains visibly detached, eager for her impending flight back to Germany. The simmering familial friction reaches a boiling point during a roadside pit stop when Haya defiantly purchases a pack of cigarettes, openly rejecting the older woman's conservative judgment and declaring that the streets of Germany embraced her when they did not. Lighting up in the backseat as the journey resumes, Haya's quiet rebellion captures the isolating complexities of diaspora and the struggle to assert personal autonomy against the heavy weight of traditional expectations.
